We have been very busy at our new location inside the PetSmart of Commack. The new facilities are a smash hit with The Paw House volunteer crew and our furry friends. Everything is working out wonderfully. Our cats have have been flying out of The Paw House lately. This week 4 of our cats will be placed in loving homes. The Paw House Has A New Home!

The current real estate doldrums has not stopped The Paw House from finding a spanking new home! The Paw House adoption center is now located in a newly built PetSmart store located at 2160 Jericho Tpke Commack NY, 11725 featuring state of the art facilities including a dedicated adoption room that can showcase up to 9 animals!

Today is a new beginning for The Paw House volunteers who will now be working closely with a team of dedicated PetSmart professionals who are truly committed to the welfare of homeless animals in our communities.

There will be a Grand Opening Celebration at the new Commack PetSmart on Saturday April 19th starting at noon. Be there! It will surely be lots of fun for both humans and animals alike.

Long Island Animal Rescue: Baby Rats Need A Home

My friend Lenore's pet rat Shawn gave birth recently and her babies need homes. Lenore purchased Shawn under the belief that she was male a rat. That's what the pet store clerk advised her. Oviously the clerk was mistaken and Lenore got more than she bargained for! She does not want to give the babies to the pet store out of fear that they will be sold as snake food. I have posted some cute photos below to aid in their adoption.

Many people have negative feelings about rats. However, rats are intelligent, playful and affectionate animals. They are highly social and possess a lifespan of 2 - 3 years. They make great starter pets for kids and adults alike.

Long Island Animal Rescue: Rose Sofia Saves Lobster

Rose Sofia Saves Giant Lobster

Any visitor to The Paw House website would easily and logically come to the conclusion that we are only involved in Long Island cat rescue. While we do specialize in cat rescue, we are willing to lend a helping hand to any animal in need. Here is a great example.

A local King Kullen supermarket acquired an extremely huge lobster. Apparently old and very large lobsters don't make good meals so the King Kullen manager decided to use the lobster to drum up publicity for the store. The lobster was cruelly confined to a display tank that could barely accommodate is large size. Fortunately for the lobster, Rose Sofia caught wind of this and took it upon herself to come to the aid of the cruelly confined crustation. The lobster would not have lived very long under the condition it was being kept. So Rose Sofia convinced the manager to allow her to ship it to Maine where it was released back into the ocean.

The Paw House: Rose Sofia Judges at Petco Talent Contest

On July 14th, a pet talent contest was held at the Selden Petco. Rose Sofia of The Paw House was a member of the esteemed panel of judges. Out of numerous entries, Jerry Zezima's dog Lizzie shone above all the rest and was declared the winner. You can view her phenomenal performance below. I advise you to hold on to your seat because what you are about to witness is unprecedented in the annals of pet talent contest history!

The PETCO Stars talent contests were a held at participating Petco stores across the country to find America's Most Talented Pet. Each participant will receive a commemorative photo of their pet and the winner at each store location will win a gift card and will be eligible to submit a digital video of their pet to PETCO judges, who will pick the top 12 finalists. The finalists will be featured on our website and the nation will be able to vote and select the most talented pet. The grand prize winner will win a trip to LA and will be featured in PETCO's advertising!

I wish Lizzie Zezima and the other furry finalists the best of luck!

Meet Daisy Mamarella! Isn't she adorable? She is the beloved pet of my friend Lenore Mamarella. Lenore is quite an animal rescue dynamo. She single-handedly traps feral cats in the central Long Island area, has them spayed/neutered (which she pays for out of her own pocket), and then releases them! She is currently caring for dozens of cats, which she has personally rescued.

Trap and release programs such as the one Lenore operates are vital in keeping the feral cat population in check and makes the job of Long Island animal adoption organizations such as The Paw House, that much easier. Bravo Lenore, keep up the good work!

Hi my name is Goldie, and I'm so lucky to have been rescued by the kind humans at The Paw House! I'm here to let you know that The Paw House needs volunteers! Would you be kind enough to assist in caring for me and my furry friends by opening up your heart and home on a temporary basis so that myself and my friends can be prepared for permanent placement in the lives of people wanting to give us the love we need and deserve?

Your commitment and cost involve only your ability to provide a small amount of space (but, of course, a mandatory large amount of kindness) and the humans at The Paw House we will provide the rest - cages, food, litter, any necessary medications if needed and accessibility to a Paw House human at all times should the need arise.

We are also seeking volunteers to help out at the Selden Petco location (1100 Middle Country Rd. Selden, NY 11784-2513) for only 30 minutes a week, cleaning our cages, feeding us and letting us show you how loveable we are - up close and personal!!

The Paw House humans work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of animals like me in desperate need of care, attention and protection. Every step towards increasing awareness of our plight and that of other homeless animals is a step towards the goal of helping those who can't do for themselve and giving us the chance to give back a thousand-fold for just a little bit of your time, energy and desire to experience unconditional love and affection.

Long Island Animal Rescue Group Meets at Glen Laurel On The Sound

On July 1st 2007, key members of the Paw House met at Glen Laurel On The Sound to discuss vital issues related operations of The Paw House. Discussions focus on generating publicity and fundraising. Members' indulged in sumptuous haute cuisine while planning a major adoption/fundraising event to be held at the Selden Petco in mid to late August.

Glen Laurel on The Sound is a picturesque Bed and Breakfast situated atop a beautifully landscaped ridge overlooking the Long Island Sound in Miller Place. The establishment specializes in Weddings and Outdoor Events and features almost 500 feet of private beach property.

The Zimmerman Family owns and operates Glen Laurel on The Sound and was extremely gracious in donating use of their property to The Paw House.

Long Island Cat Rescue - Tigger-Bear's Near Tragedy

One day a patron of Selden Petco spotted Tigger-Bear in his cage and fell in love with his handsome angular face. She decided to adopt him thinking that he would make a nice addition to her family and a wonderful companion to her dog, an affable Labrador Retriever.

On June 30th, Rose Sofia and Dara Keenan delivered Tigger-Bear to his new home. Tigger-Bear's cool laid-back personality made him a good candidate for living in a home with a dog. However, upon entering the house, the Labrador Retriever suddenly pounced on the cat carrier nearly scaring poor Tigger-Bear out of his stripes! The dog meant no harm. He was just excited to see his new companion. However. Tigger-Bear was not aware of this.

Seeing how the introduction got off to a bad start, Rose Sofia explained the proper procedure for introducing the cat and dog. Basically this required that they be separated for a least a week, which would allow each to become accustomed to the other via scent and sound without having physical contact. After becoming familiar with one another in this manner, frequent chaperoned meetings between the cat and dog would consummate the enter-species relationship!

Tigger-Bear's new owner was anxious to put him and the dog together right away but agreed to follow Rose Sofia's advice. After all seemed well, Rose Sofia and Dara Keenan left Tigger-Bear in his new home. Three days later something went terribly amiss.

Tigger-Bear's owner called Dara Keenan in a fit of rage. "I want that cat out of my house!", she screamed! Dara Keenan rushed to the house to get Tigger-Bear. There was no telling what the owner was capable of doing in her state of mind. According to the owner, the Labrador Retriever pushed its way into Tigger-Bear's room and playfully charged at him. Tigger-Bear, not knowing the dog's intention, reacted defensively by swatting the dog in the eye and scratching one its corneas.

Dara Keenan was doubtful of the owner's story about the dog pushing its way into Tigger-Bear's room. She believed that owner tried to put them together too soon. Nevertheless, she removed Tigger-Bear from the house. A few days later Tigger-Bear's former owner called Dara Keenan asking to have a second chance with Tigger-Bear and basically admitted to making mistakes, which confirmed Dara Keenan's initial suspicion. No second chance was granted but fortunately this story has a happy ending.

After being removed from the home, Tigger-Bear was placed back in his cage at the Selden Petco where someone else spotted him and fell in love with his handsome face. He is now in a home with a "purrfectly" responsible and loving owner. The Labrador's eye injury was superficial and he is expected to make a full recovery.

This is just one of many cat rescue adventures in annals of Rose Sofia and the volunteers at The Paw House.

The Paw House: Meet Tigger-Bear and Pumpkin

Tigger-Bear: I am a 1 year old male tabby and white neutered cat. I am a big boy with a diamond on my nose, isn't it cute? My favorite thing is to be cuddled and I also like to play. I get along with other animals and my foster parent thinks I am just about the nicest cat he has met! I'd love to be a part of your family!

Pumpkin: I am a 2 year old male neutered orange tabby cat. I was saved from a horrible injury 2 times! My people put a collar on me as a kitten, and left me outside all the time, they forgot to loosen the collar as I grew. The collar became embedded in my neck so badly that it appeared as if my neck was slit open. I was fixed up, but not fully. The same people never brought me to get my stitches out, and surrendered me to The Paw House. Before the nice people at The Paw House could get my stitches out, I pulled the stitches and popped open my old wound. Again I had to have surgery and repair my neck. It took a long time to heal. Lots of medication and attention was needed. Thank goodness The Paw House was able to afford my expensive surgery and care for me during my recovery. I am all healed and very friendly and sweet. I am ready to be someone's pet forever!

Rose Sofia: Conducts Animal Rescue Seminar for Local Girl Scout Group

On April 7, 2007 Rose Sofia conducted an animal rescue seminar for the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. The seminar took place at the Selden Petco on Middle Country Rd. The event was highly educational and a great deal of fun for all!

The girls of Troupe 960 will undoubtably use their newly acquired knowledge of animal care and rescue procedures to augment their ability positively impact the surrounding community. Below are some photos of the event.

On February 10 & 11, 2007 The Paw House conducted its annual Valentine's Day fund raising event at the Petco of Selden. A raffle was held to raise much needed funds for its animal rescue and adoption efforts.

Raffle prizes consisted of a variety of products and services donated by local businesses, soft animal toys and candy. The event was a great success a lot of fun for all who participated!

There are many health related issues to consider for the happiness of your cat and the deworming process should be a top priority. In order to effectively deworm your cat you should understand, how often the procedure should be done, the kind of worms that typically infect cats and ways in which various types of worms can affect you cat's health. Before exploring theses issues further, here is some background information for you to consider.

Just about all kittens are infected with some kind of parasitic worm at the time of birth, which were transmitted while the kitten was developing inside the mother's womb. Alternatively worm eggs can be transmitted via the mother's milk during the nursing stage. Unless the mother is medically confirmed to be worm-free and lives in an immaculate indoor environment, there is a high probability the her kittens will have worms. With that being said, it is important to understand the following conditions as well as the deworming process involved.

All stray kittens will have worms. Don't assume otherwise. Any stray kitten recovered must be taken to a veterinarian as soon as possible for deworming and other treatments. If your cat is a hunter and catches and consumes small animals such as birds or mice, it is highly likely that your cat will have worms from ingesting worm larvae that commonly exist in these animals.

Indoor cats can also be infected with worms. Chronic heaving and retching behavior is suggestive of a possible worm infestation in your cat. If a cat vomits and the worms are visible, this of course is a clear proof that the cat needs to be dewormed immediately. The most common type or worm to infect cats are Roundworms that look like spaghetti and Tapeworms that are flat and with box shaped sections.

Veterinarian worm testing may not always show a positive result for worms even if they exist. The common fecal test will only show a positive indication of worms if they are active and migrating within the cat. Quite often, worms can exist dormant within the cat's body for a long time and only manifest themselves in a fecal exam after some sort of stress event like pregnancy or surgery.

Sudden changes in appetite or diarrhea are possible signs of worm infection. Fur that loses its sheen or the developing of a protruding belly are other signs. Cats that are observed eating feces must definitely be put through a deworming process.

Determining the exact type of worm infecting a cat will be critical to successful treatment because medication is specific to the type of worm. For example medication to rid a cat of round worms will not work for tape worms or other types of worms. Generally fecal testing is the best method for determining the type of worm infecting cat.

Worm medications can be in the form of a liquid or a pill and when administering medication to a cat it is vitally important to confirm that the cat actually ingests it. Concealing the medication in cat food or a treat is a simple way to accomplish this. It is also important to understand that it typically takes several deworming treatments to completely rid a cat of worms. This is due to the fact the worms in their various developmental stages will vary in their susceptibility to the medication.

In conclusion, you should subject your cat to a deworming process as warranted by conditions mention earlier. Regular veterinary fecal tests and closely monitoring your cat for symptomatic and behavioral signs of worm infection is the key for determining when and how often your cat should be dewormed.

Cat Adoption: Meet Sparkles & Rosko

Here are the latest cats to be showcased for adoption at the Selden Petco!

This is Sparkles. She is a beautiful sparkly eyed female Pastel about 9 months old. As you can see Sparkles has not quite grasped the concept of sleeping on TOP of the cat bed : )

Here's Rosko. Rosko is a robust friendly male tabby cat about 3 years old. He has a big black racing stripe down his back! Clearly Rosko is not pleased with his "jailhouse" accomodations!

My cell phone photos of these cats don't do them justice. Please stop by and see them for yourself. They need homes. Please help.

The Paw House Launches New Website!

The Paw House, a volunteer animal rescue and adoption organization, has recently launched a website. The Paw House is a registered 501(c3) charity founded by Rose Sofia who is an indefatigable advocate for homeless animals in the central Long Island area.

The Paw House website, PawHouseOnline.com should prove to be an invaluable tool in assisting the organization in volunteer recruitment and fund raising efforts to renovate a building to be used as an adoption center and veterinary clinic to provide low-cost spay and neutering for area pet owners.

Practically every day The Paw House gets requests to come to the aid of animals in need and supplies aid and comfort to animals that are abandoned at, the Petco of Selden, supermarkets, private homes or just wandering around in dangerous places.

Recovered animals are placed in foster homes, given medical care and after being declared healthy by a veterinarian, they are showcased for adoption at the Petco Of Selden on Middle Country Rd.

Presently The Paw House is caring dozens of cats and kittens in foster homes maintained by its volunteer membership. These animals will soon be featured on the website which should expedite the adoption process by increasing public awareness.
